League and Cup double in undefeated Halifax Junior Cricket League season

We were delighted to be asked to host one of the two Halifax Junior Cricket League Cup Finals days over the Bank Holiday weekend.
A army of volunteers mainly comprising of under 15 player's parents and friends ensured LCC was showcased to the max on Bank Holiday Monday - thanks to the bakers, BBQers, pizza chefs, groundsteam, kitchen and bar staff for enabling us to create a real event for the 6 partaking teams and the biggest crowds seen at cricket matches at LCC for a decade or two.
Thanks also to the unstinting efforts of Halifax Junior League Chairman Phil Sharples, not only as MC for the day but throughout the 2024 season. On the day he was ably assisted by Alice Hesmondhalgh.
The 10 am Under 11 development (softball) final was won by Illingworth St Marys who retained their 100% record with victory over King Cross.
The Under 18 final was a nailbiter with Northowram Fields, 129 for 3, striking the winning boundary with just two balls remaining v Low Moor Holy Trinity who had made 128 for 3 in their 20 overs.
Sandwiched in between, in an action packed day of cricket, was the Under 15 Collinson Cup final with Low Moor Holy Trinity our opponents after they defeated Copley in their semi-final. Lightcliffe had beaten league runners up Thornton in our semi-final.
Low Moor skipper Ryan J called wrongly and Lightcliffe leader Isaac M had no hesitation in choosing to bat.
Monty R ensured Lightcliffe were off to a good start including a partnership of 26 off 18 balls with Sam Walker who made 17 off just 10 deliveries. When Monty retired hitting a 6 towards the graveyard his innings of 37 not out off 30 balls, which also included 4 fours, had created a solid foundation.
Despite a mid innings wobble Hari S, with 27 off 33 balls, kept the scoreboard ticking before U13 player Alex G provided the late innings striking 2 fours and 2 sixes in his 28 off 20 balls.
The Lightcliffe total of 140 for 6 from the allotted 20 overs was the lowest total they had made in the cup this year but appeared to be competitive as the players tucked into the farm shop BBQ from Harrys D & W and freshly made pizzas on offer from the Guiseppe Stead family!!
The Lightcliffe lads quickly displayed hunger for Low Moor wickets as Hari s made the breakthrough off the 4th delivery via a catch at mid wicket from Luke B.
Bradley M showed positive intent for Low Moor striking three consecutive deliveries he faced to the boundary. However, two wickets in Hari's 2nd over, both clean bowled with the middle stump cartwheeling each time, put Lightcliffe firmly in the driving seat.

When Oliver F had Bradley caught by Isaac off the first ball of the 4th over, the match was effectively over as a contest with Low Moor struggling on 15 for 4.
Miserly bowling from spinner Sam W and seamer Luke B with a wicket apiece and only one run conceded from their four overs saw The Young Villager's dominance grow. Jack A and Imad H both bowled tightly too before Alex took 2 for 1 off his 2 overs.
It was left to Richard B, who had scored 96 for Lightcliffe's 4th XI the previous day, to seal the win with 2 for 2 as Low Moor were bowled out for 37 as Lightcliffe won by 103 runs.
The shortlist for "Player of the Match" was Monty for his 37 not out, the only retirement of the match and Alex for his 28 not out and 2 wickets for 1 run.
But for his 27 not out and 3 wickets for 6 ripping the heart out of the Low Moor upper order, Hari S was chosen as the "Player of the Match."
This was a fitting end to the Hari's U15 career as he joins Isaac M, Dylan C, Imad H and Richard B in moving up to the U18 age group along with Sam S and Austin H who both missed the final due to holidays.
We now look forward to the U13 Collinson Cup Final which was postponed on an inclement Bank Holiday Sunday. This will now be played on Sunday 15th September at Booth CC.
