Paying tribute to Brian Wade

Paying tribute to Brian Wade

Stephen Naylor30 Jan - 10:01

We are saddened to hear about the death of Brian Wade, 1st & 2nd team leg-spinner of the 1950s and 60s, who has passed away at his Hartshead home.

Brian was a member of the second team which won the league championship in 1958. He had made his first-team debut in 1955 but did not gain a regular place for several seasons.

In 1962, he was the leading wicket-taker with 41 victims. In 1964 he was a member of the side which beat East Bierley in the Priestley Cup Final.

Most of Brian’s subsequent cricket was played in the second team under the captaincy of Keith Hunt. These were successful seasons in which the league was won three times and the Priestley Shield once. (Brian is front left in the photograph above after the 1968 Shield victory.)

Brian subsequently played golf at Lightcliffe, as his father and grandfather had before him. His father, Major (a forename, not a title), was a former Bradford League professional, and junior coach at Lightcliffe during most of the 1950s.

Brian is remembered as a very fine cricketer and a bringer of jollity to the changing room. Our condolences to his wife, Pat, once a tea lady, and their children.

His funeral will take place at Park Wood Crematorium in Elland on Thursday 19th February at 2.15pm.
