Paying tribute to Peter Westerby

Paying tribute to Peter Westerby

Stephen Naylor24 Nov - 08:49

Peter Westerby, our 1st XI captain between 1971-1976, died over the weekend at Kirkwood Hospice after a long illness.

Peter, pictured above in the centre of the front row, joined the Club in 1969 and made an immediate impact as an outstanding all-rounder and athletic cover fielder.

After Lightcliffe he played for Mirfield, Northowram and Halifax Nomads. He also played a couple of games for Lightcliffe 3rd XI in 2001, our first season in the Halifax Sunday League.

Peter, his wife Carolyn, and sons John and David immersed themselves in all aspects of club life in the summers of the 1970s. And that strong commitment remained as Peter and Carolyn were members of the pétanque section on its formation in 2020.

We last saw Peter at the Club in June when he joined us for the launch of Bob Horne’s book on 150 years of Lightcliffe Cricket Club – an illustration of how important the club connection was to him, and to all of us, half a century on from his captaincy.

We send all our best wishes to Peter’s family and friends.

UPDATE:

Peter's funeral will be held on Friday 12th December at 11 am at Christ the King Church, Stocksbank Road, Battyeford, Mirfield, WF14 9QT.
