Rosie Hydes: 1953-2026

Stephen Naylor

Everyone at Lightcliffe Cricket Club is saddened to learn of the death of Rosie Hydes (formerly Tesseyman), aged 73.

Rosie was a long standing member, with her connection to club life going back decades.

Her two sons, Richard and Daniel, played for many years, as successful products of our junior ranks, moving seamlessly in to senior cricket.

Rosie was a keen follower; a regular, home and away, cheering them on from the sidelines. There weren’t many games when she wasn’t present; as spectator, volunteer or organiser.

The club was, as today, a really happy, fun, enjoyable place to be around in the 1990s.

Ask anyone for the key names behind the scenes from that era, the bedrock of club life, and Rosie will trip readily off the tongue. Along with Linda Stead and others, she was an integral part of the Willow Tea Room operation, producing salad teas that were, rightly, the envy of many a club across the league and beyond. They were known as the best on the circuit for a reason in that golden era. They genuinely were.

Bob Horne’s book on the club history beautifully charts times long gone and, through his diligent efforts, Rosie’s contribution is perfectly captured. There’s a photo of a fashion show held in the old pavilion, perfectly capturing many of the people at the heart of club life in that era.

In recent years, Rosie has not been seen around the club has much but still called in now and again, always taking a keen interest in life on and off the pitch, with husband Michael by her side.

Just three weeks ago, her older son Richard flew in from Australia with his wife and children to be at her side. That would have meant so much to her. Our thoughts are with all Rosie's loved ones and friends at this sad news. Her contribution to club life, understated but never undervalued will never be forgotten.

RIP, Rosie
