The never ending game of cricket

It was game that started at 5.30pm on Thursday and felt like it finished in the early hours of Friday morning with Lightcliffe the eventual winners. Lightcliffe opted to bat first on account of being the away opposition and having had to travel through the rush hour traffic. Opportunities were shared around and the batting line up was adjusted to allow a few different players a chance at the top of the order. In the 4th over Lightcliffe found themselves 12 for 3 and needed a couple of players to bat the side out of trouble. Finn Brookes again hit a retirement score in quick time, and Jake Heaton added 31*. Overs were seemingly moving backwards and with a late player drop out and with 2 retirements Lightcliffe found themselves with the last man at the crease with 7 overs still to play. Rule books were checked and it was discovered that in the Halifax league the first retired batsman can return and resume their innings. So Finn Brookes returned to the crease to join last man Tom Coates and between them they negotiated the remaining 7 overs, adding a valuable 34 runs. Toms stickability at the crease (3 not out) allowed Finn to register a half century and he ended up 55 not out. Pleasingly every one of the players had the opportunity of a bat during the innings.

George Leach ripped through the top of the order and took 3 quick wickets. This quick burst prevented any realistic opportunity for Thornton to chase the total. They did gather themselves and had strength further down the order as they rallied to register a total 1 run short of the ton. Brad Cooper took another wicket to add to his ever increasing collection, Leo Flanagan picked up 2 with a good spell of left arm off spin, and Jake, Oliver and Gurdaas each picked up a wicket. With retired batsman returning for both teams, 17 wickets falling, overs seemingly multiplying with the additional wides and no balls, it was a game that felt like it would never end. Thankfully it eventually came to a conclusion just as the sun found its hiding place to the west of the picturesque Thornton ground.
