U13s into Quarter Finals of the Halifax Collinson Cup

Stephen Naylor1 Aug - 07:39

Lightcliffe’s young U13s side comfortably beat Booth to progress to the quarter finals of the Halifax Junior Cricket League’s Collinson Cup.

On a beautiful evening at one of the most picturesque grounds around, where cow corner is a literal description, skipper George Deighton won the toss, chose to bat and decided to show why by smashing 25 from 15 balls with 5 fours - retiring not out in the fourth over.

It set the tone for a strong batting performance with fellow opener Charlie Modgill run out just short of the retirement figure and then George Terry and Harry Betts both also being unbeaten.

After the fall of a few quick wickets slowed the progress, it was left to Noah Boshell and Dominic Naylor to close out the innings, both not out with a partnership of 17 that cemented the solid position with a score of 151/4.

After a quick turnaround (the light starts to fade fast at this point in the season), Charlie Carroll and Noah opened the bowling and the first wicket fell in the second over.

It was the story of an innings that never really got going with Booth always behind the rate required, miserly bowling across the team (Charlie C 0-13, Noah 1-14, Charlie M 1-11, Henry 1-6, Charlie D 0-11, George H 0-13, George D 0-6, Isaac 0-10, Dom 0-10 and George T 0-3), and some quality fielding, including two run outs both involving Dom – once as bowler, once getting the ball into Harry at the stumps to take the wicket.

151 was always going to be a challenge to chase – and so it proved with Booth ending their 20 overs on 99/5.

Lightcliffe win by 52 runs and progress to the quarter finals where a tie at home against Outlane awaits.
