Lightcliffe’s U11s beat Batley in opening Bradford League fixture

Stephen Naylor10 May - 14:59

A positive all-round display from Lightcliffe’s U11s saw them open their Bradford Junior Cricket League campaign with a 28-run run over a strong Batley side at Till Carr Lane.

The visitors kept the scoreboard ticking over with some great shot-making and boundaries, but the total was always pegged back by a regular fall of wickets. It was two each for George, Dom and Joey, and one each for Max, Jonty and Jack, with great fielding performances restricting the flow.

In this league and in this format, where every dismissal takes four off the total, that makes a huge difference and while the nine wickets that fell were not decisive, they made a big different at the halfway point to the run chase required.

99 were scored, a nice round 100 the target and so, after a refresh of bacon sandwiches thanks to Liz and Emma in the Clubhouse Kitchen, the teams re-emerged into what was now a beautifully sunny Till Carr Lane.

Opening pair George and Jonty started as well as it was possible to start – adding runs, keeping their wickets, and scoring five boundaries between them. George, who had retired not out in his last two matches for the U13s, once again looked poised, assured and confident as he amassed 30 runs from his 15 balls.

Joey and Hugo kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely as the second pair with a couple of brilliant 4s from Hugo, though a couple of wickets did slow the chase. Isaac and Dom were next in and the rate increased with more positive batting, including finding the boundaries and excellent running between the wickets for important singles. By the end of their 5 overs, with 5 more to go, Lightcliffe’s net total was already past Batley’s. But, as ever with these rules, anything is possible.

The large home support had nothing to worry about though as the big hitting Max and Jack batted smartly but with intent. Five 4s for Max, one 4 and a 6 from his last ball from Jack, meant it ended up being a 28-run victory with Lightcliffe scoring 151 for the loss of 6 wickets in their 20 overs – a net score of 127.

As many of the Over 50s team who had been due to compete in the Grey Foxes tie straight after gathered on the boundary rope, their tie cruelly and disappointing called off at the very last minute when Pudsey St Lawrence conceded, they applauded off some of our youngest cricketers who’d put on a great display.
