A classic British summer day greeted the teams at Lightcliffe - sun, rain, wind, and a few confused spectators wondering whether to bring sunglasses or umbrellas.

Lightcliffe welcomed table-topping Greetland to the village, fielding a team that blended youthful promise with seasoned experience - including debutant U13 Harrison Heaton.

Captain Bruce won the toss and, with confidence and perhaps a touch of optimism, elected to bowl. Opening the attack were juniors Heaton and Harry Dalzell, and both delivered with a level of control and discipline that belied their years. Ten overs later, Greetland were restricted to just 29 runs. A dream start, and one that earned nods of approval from all.

First change brought Smaldon and Modgill into the attack. Smaldon immediately found life in the pitch, troubling the batters and eventually removing Iqbal for 23 with a fine delivery. The very next over, Modgill—turning the ball square—forced Raif to chop on, and Lightcliffe had their tails up.

After a good spell from Smaldon, 13-year old Freddie Wood was then introduced and, after a slightly loose first over, he adjusted well and cleaned up Ali for 14 with a perfect delivery. At the other end, Neil Wood was brought on in the 22nd over - and wasted no time, removing the well-set Riaz (38) with just his second ball. A huge moment, and one that had the home supporters celebrating and the usually quiet mannered Wood celebrating loudly.

Freddie struck again in his next over, bowling Zohaibe for a duck. The Woods - senior and junior - kept things tight, before Bruce rotated the attack once more, bringing back Heaton for a controlled two-over spell that went for just two runs.

At the other end, James Lunn came on and after a slightly expensive first over, came storming back with two wickets in his next, ripping the heart out of Greetland’s middle order. The innings finished with two run-outs—one apiece for Bruce and his son James—capping off an excellent fielding performance and bowling effort that dismissed the visitors for 147.

The Chase: A Bit of Drama, a Lot of Character

After the break, Captain Bruce opened the innings alongside the in-form Jagger. The pair looked steady before Jagger was caught attempting to lift one over the infield—22/1. Richard Buckland was next in, but was unfortunate to fall LBW in the 10th over. Then came Heaton, who was unlucky to play one straight back to the bowlers grasp. The villagers at this point were rocked.

Neil Wood arrived at the crease and, alongside Captain Bruce, began to settle things down. But just as the partnership began to build, came a moment that sparked disbelief across the ground. Captain Bruce was given out LBW in what was a decision not without controversy (to say the least...) - the captain, a true gentleman of the game took it with admirable composure, but was clearly seething and ready to burst.

At 63/4, the game was delicately poised. But in stepped James Lunn, determined to right the wrong and support Wood, who was clearly batting with added fire. Together, the pair produced a calm, measured, and ultimately match-winning partnership of 84.

There was one final twist when during this partnership Wood was again given out LBW, despite him clearly middling the ball into his own pad.

This time, after an honest conversation and a few words from Lunn, and a true disbelief from Wood the umpire reversed the decision - apparently citing the House Music Festival in nearby Brighouse as a distraction. A first for most of us but his (the umpires) removal of the decision probably prevented an onslaught of expletives and learned vocabulary for the participating juniors.

Galvanised, Wood and Lunn pushed on. Wood eventually fell for a solid 42 with just a few needed, and Dalzell came in to finish the job with a sweetly timed boundary three balls later. Lunn, who batted exemplary finishing with a great 40.

A Big Win, and a Big Statement

A superb team performance, with contributions from every corner - especially the juniors who showed maturity well beyond their years. The result moves Lightcliffe back up the table and proves they can compete with the best. A great day for the club, and one that bodes very well for the future.
