After making the journey to the other side of Leeds, the home side won the toss and chose to field - it was to be the only thing lost by Lightcliffe’s captain Lucas Arnot all evening.
Put into bat, the young Villager set out to prove they’d made the wrong call – and prove it he did as he made a blistering start to retire not out with 54 from just 23 balls, a sublime innings that included three 4s and five 6s. His aggressive but composed strokeplay put Scarcroft under immediate pressure and gave the visitors the platform they needed to push on.
There was support throughout the order – Charlie Modgill’s assured batting added 42 from 36, Will Sweeten made 31 from 34 and Alex Gillgrass kept the scoreboard moving with 24 from 17.
Lightcliffe closed on an excellent total of 168, with only four wickets down. It was a score that gave the bowlers plenty to work with.
Having opened the batting with aplomb, who else could open the bowling than the captain himself. Lucas showed his class with 3-13 from 3 overs, while regular wickets and disciplined spells across the attack proved decisive. There were 2-11 for Will, 1-18 for Alex, 1-11 for Harrison, 1-8 for Ted, 1-9 for George and 1-2 for Charlie, whose wicket with a ball into the hands of brother Jacob ended the match in the 19th over.
Scarcroft reached 114 – 54 runs short and securing the semi-final spot for Lightcliffe who will now take on local rivals King Cross in the last four.
Thank you to all those who made the journey to support the team.
