Well, as it turns out – not much, thanks to a lot of work from the volunteer team who make the games happen week-in, week-out during the season from both our club and others.
It was a night when getting the game on was the priority - and get the game on we did as we welcomed Buttershaw St Paul’s to Brighouse Cricket Club for our ‘home’ game.
Buttershaw won the toss and chose to put Lightcliffe into bat which brought Harry and Luke to the crease. They hit five boundaries between them but also lost three wickets so a steady start against some good bowling and excellent fielding. Next in was Ted and George who grew the total thanks to some brilliant shots. Ellie and Evie were the next pair and their running between the wickets demonstrated how much the young cricketers have grown in their reading of the game this season. Bertie and Reggie kept the scoreboard ticking over while final pair Jack and Dougie added an important 22 to take the total to 119/6, a net score of 295.
In reply, Buttershaw got off to a shaky start, losing a wicket in the first over to Reggie and the score hovering around the opening 200 for some time. But despite the uphill struggle, they remained focused, found their form and started to add runs – 25 were added thanks to some impressive batting from the final pair to see them finish on 77/8, a net score of 245.
Mention has to go to a brilliant catch from Bertie, which sadly won’t make the scorecard as it came from a no ball. And a brilliant run out from a young Buttershaw player whose amazement his throw had directly hit the stumps was a moment that will live long in the memory.
It’s those moments that make the game on a night when Lightcliffe got the points, but cricket got the win.
