We start with the first silverware of the season for Lightcliffe as the 3rd XI won the Rod Warhurst Cup Final on Sunday by 79 runs.
As yet unbeaten across the season, Gary Lewsley and his team, packed with some of the club's most talented juniors guided by experienced cricketers, produced a strong all-round performance.
Man of the match Jack Anderson’s fluent half-century set the platform before Michael Wood and more of our talented young Villagers led an excellent bowling display.
Batting first, Lightcliffe made a steady start before 15-year old Jack, who'd last Sunday secured his maiden century, gave the innings real momentum. He struck a superb 60 from just 38 balls, including 12 fours and a six, in a knock that lasted just short of the hour.
There were useful contributions throughout the order. 14-year old Charlie Modgill added 19, John Potkins made 10, and Kiefer Hanman played an important middle-order hand with 34 from 31 balls, hitting five fours and a six. Further down the order, the skipper made 15 and Michael Wood chipped in with 10.
Lightcliffe’s late innings was finished well by 14-year old Jacob Carroll and 16-year old Oliver Frearson, who both ended unbeaten on 18 not out, helping the side reach a competitive 205 for 8 from 40 overs. The depth of contributions proved important, with Lightcliffe posting a total that always looked challenging.
Upper Hopton’s reply was kept under control from the outset by a disciplined Lightcliffe attack. Oliver and Jacob opened abd both bowled tightly - Frearson taking 1 for 19 from five overs and Carroll returning 1 for 27 from seven, including two maidens.
The keeping was impressive throughout with 15-year old Ethan Wood's contribution featuring stumpings, catches and run outs.
The standout bowling spell came from Michael Wood, who produced excellent figures of 3 for 22 from eight overs, including three maidens, to put Lightcliffe firmly on top. Charlie Modgill backed up his batting with 2 for 30 while Ted Stead also bowled economically, taking 1 for 20 including the crucial final wicket to seal victory by dismissing Upper Hopton for 123.
It was a fine team performance, supported by 12th man 14-year old Charlie Carroll and Lightcliffe scorer 15-year old Seth Thompson and the many family, friends and supporters on the boundary giving vocal and vital support throughout the afternoon.

Lightcliffe's sixth Rod Warhust Cup win was all the more special because of the contribution of the young Villagers who've grown up at the club and helped bring home the first silverware of the season. Congratulations to (left to right) Ethan, Charlie, Jacob, Charlie, Ted, Jack and Oliver.
The Cup victory followed a double 20-point Saturday with strong wins for the 1st & 2nd XI.
Jordan Laban made a brilliant 111 at home helping power the 1st XI to a great win over Hanging Heaton. Lightcliffe scored 278 in their 50 overs and then dismissed the visitors for 180 to win by 98.
There was also a century for Rhys Jowett in the 2nd XI game at Pudsey Congs as Lightcliffe soared to 290 in the 50 overs. Impressive batting was followed by impressive bowling as Lucas Arnot, fresh from leading the 15s to semi-final victory last night, took 5-24 as the hosts were dismissed for 152 to secure a 138 run victory.

There was important junior action over the weekend too - all featuring wins.
On Friday night, our U15s beat King Cross CC to reach the Vitality U15 Club T20 Yorkshire Final.
They won by 26 runs in a competitive, enthralling match at a busy Till Carr Lane.
It means we’ll face Harrogate CC at Till Carr Lane as our young Villagers look to defend their title.
The U15 success continues to inspire our younger cricketers too who were training as they played on Friday night.

Our U9s won their Halifax League game against Barkisland, while our U11s played an inter-club friendly with 16 young players competing against each other.

Alongside Saturday's U9s Festival of Cricket, and the young people who featured - and made an impact - in our senior teams this weekend, it shows the strength of junior cricket at Lightcliffe - both today, and for the future.
